Reflecting on Five Decades of Partnership with Elgin Community College
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
When Elgin Community College celebrated the grand opening of its new Manufacturing & Technology Center this September, the event marked more than the opening of a new building. It represented years of planning, collaboration, and investment in the future of students, employers, and the workforce needs of our region.
For Lamp Incorporated, it was also an opportunity to reflect on a relationship that spans generations.
A Relationship That Spans Generations
Long before the Manufacturing & Technology Center became part of the campus, Lamp was helping build spaces that supported ECC’s mission. Our history with the college includes the construction of its gymnasium in 1970 and continues through numerous projects that have supported the campus’s growth and evolution over the last five decades.
That connection is especially meaningful because Lamp’s roots are here. Founded in Elgin in 1933, the company has spent generations helping build schools, community institutions, public facilities, healthcare environments, and other spaces that serve Northern Illinois. For us, projects like the Manufacturing & Technology Center are more than construction projects. They are opportunities to invest in the communities we call home.
Over the years, that partnership has taken many forms.

In 2011, Lamp provided construction management services for ECC’s 145,000-square-foot Health & Life Sciences Building (Building A, Main Entrance), a state-of-the-art facility developed to address employer-defined shortages in healthcare and allied health professions. As the college’s main entrance and a highly visible campus landmark, the building expanded training opportunities for nursing, dental, and healthcare students while achieving LEED Silver certification.
That same year, Lamp completed the ITR Welding Lab Renovation, helping modernize technical education spaces that support skilled trades training.
In 2012, the company completed renovations to the Health & Building Technology facility, continuing ECC’s investment in workforce-focused education and instructional environments.

More recently, Lamp partnered with ECC on the multi-phased renovation of the Arts Center (Building H). Completed in 2024, the 60,735-square-foot renovation included mechanical upgrades, lighting replacements, new finishes, improvements to the Blizzard Theatre, a Music Wing addition, a Scene Shop expansion, and enhancements throughout the Arts Center that will support future generations of performers, artists, educators, and students.
Taken together, these projects tell the story of a college continually adapting to serve its community. Healthcare, skilled trades, business and technology, visual and performing arts, and now advanced manufacturing all represent different chapters in ECC’s ongoing commitment to student success.
Looking Toward the Future
The Manufacturing & Technology Center continues that tradition while looking firmly toward the future.
The more than 150,000-square-foot facility was designed to meet the evolving needs of students, employers, and industry. It brings together advanced manufacturing, robotics and automation, welding and fabrication, HVAC, maintenance technology, green energy technology, and workforce development programs under one roof. Students now have access to industry-aligned learning environments that mirror real-world workplaces and help prepare them for careers in high-demand fields.
An Investment in People
What stood out most during the grand opening celebration was the focus on opportunity.
Speakers emphasized preparing students for meaningful careers, responding to changing workforce needs, and ensuring educational programs evolve alongside industry. The Manufacturing & Technology Center was not presented simply as a building project. It was presented as an investment in people.
That perspective is especially meaningful because the facility itself was brought to life by the very professions it now helps support.
The building was constructed by skilled tradespeople, technicians, project managers, engineers, designers, educators, and countless other professionals working toward a common goal. Today, students walk through those same spaces preparing to become the next generation of skilled workers, technicians, and industry leaders.
There is something fitting about that connection.
The trades helped build a facility that will help inspire and prepare future tradespeople for decades to come.
The Power of Partnership
The grand opening also served as a reminder that projects of this scale are never the result of a single organization. The Manufacturing & Technology Center reflects the dedication of college leadership, faculty, industry partners, elected officials, donors, community supporters, and many others who shared a vision for expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the regional workforce pipeline.
That spirit of partnership is something the Lamp family has valued throughout its history.
For generations, Lamp has been honored to help deliver schools, colleges, parks, healthcare facilities, municipal buildings, and other public projects throughout Northern Illinois. While buildings are the visible outcome, the relationships behind them are what make the work meaningful.
That commitment continues today under the leadership of Ian Lamp, whose longstanding involvement with the Elgin Community College Foundation reflects a belief that building stronger communities extends beyond construction. It requires investment in the institutions, partnerships, and people that help communities thrive.
More Than a Building
The Manufacturing & Technology Center is a powerful example of that belief in action.
It is a place where students will begin careers. Where workers will develop new skills. Where employers will find future talent. Where education and industry will continue working together to meet the demands of a changing world.
And for Lamp, it represents another chapter in a relationship with Elgin Community College that has helped shape the campus for more than fifty years.
We are grateful for the opportunity to have been part of that journey and look forward to seeing the impact the Manufacturing & Technology Center will have on students, employers, and our community for generations to come.
